The eight trigrams

Three lines, two states, exactly eight combinations. Structure first, names after.

Open the trigram builder and flip the lines yourself · why there are exactly eight

How this site teaches

  1. 01

    Structure first, names after

The trigrams need not be memorized. Zhen is the one whose single yang line sits at the bottom, Gen the one where it sits at the top — hold the pattern and all eight follow.

  2. 02

You reason it out, then see the answer

Every step of a casting is visible: how three coins become 6, 7, 8 and 9, which line moves, how the resulting hexagram is generated.

  3. 03

    Wrong answers get explained

Not just right or wrong, but which step went astray.

  4. 04

    Sources labelled by layer

The Zhou Yi itself, the Ten Wings, classical commentary, this site’s own explanation and later systems are each marked, and never blended together.
