What this hexagram saysL4

Earth above the lake: standing on the bank and looking down. Lín is to approach from above — to oversee, to draw near to what is below you. Two strong lines have entered at the bottom and are advancing. The hexagram catches a rising movement at the moment it is still gathering.

When it comes upThis comes up when something is growing in your favour and you are the one drawing near to it — a role you are stepping into, people coming under your care. The judgment attaches a date to the good fortune: in the eighth month, misfortune. Advance while the time supports advancing, and know it is a season and not a state.

This section is written for this site (L4), working from the source text, the Ten Wings and the classical commentaries on this page. It is not a translation of any of them.

JUDGMENT · L1

Lin (indicates that under the conditions supposed in it) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firmly correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.

Legge’s romanization predates pinyin, so the same word may be spelled differently in the two systems (Kh’ien / Qián). Body text on this site uses pinyin throughout.

YiStep readingL4

Great progress and success, advantage in being correct — and then: in the eighth month there will be misfortune. The Yi rarely puts a clock on a favourable judgment. The two strong lines below are growing, and the same movement that carries them up will carry them down again. The warning belongs to the good fortune, not against it.

Kong YingdaL3

TUAN · Tuan commentary · L2

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The first line, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the second line). Through his firm correctness there will be good fortune.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Approaching in company; correctness brings good fortune. This line and the one above rise together — the advance is not solitary. The Xiang says the aim is to act correctly. At the very start of a rise, what you are moving with matters as much as that you are moving.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The second line, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; (advancing) will be in every way advantageous.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Approaching in company again: good fortune, and nothing that is not advantageous. This is the strongest line in the hexagram. The Xiang’s note is odd and worth keeping — it has not yet complied with the mandate. This advance is not obedience to anything above; it carries its own force.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The third line, divided, shows one well pleased (indeed) to advance, (but whose action) will be in no way advantageous. If he become anxious about it (however), there will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Sweet approach — and nothing advantageous in it. This is the line that draws near by being agreeable, and agreeableness alone carries nothing. But the Yi opens a door: once anxious about it, there is no error. Recognising that the charm is empty is itself the correction.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fourth line, divided, shows one advancing in the highest mode. There will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Approach carried to the utmost. This line stands directly over the strong line at the bottom and comes the whole way down to meet it. The Xiang says the position is right. No fortune is promised and none is needed — going the full distance to what is beneath you is simply correct.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fifth line, divided, shows the advance of wisdom, such as befits the great ruler. There will be good fortune.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

The approach of wisdom, as befits a great ruler. Wisdom here is specifically not doing it yourself: the line holds the centre and lets the capable lines below advance. The Xiang calls it acting from the middle. It rules this hexagram, and it rules by not descending into the work.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The sixth line, divided, shows the advance of honesty and generosity. There will be good fortune, and no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Generous, thoroughgoing approach: good fortune, and no error. At the top, farthest from the rising lines, this line comes down anyway. The Xiang says the aim is within — the interest is genuinely in what lies below, not in the position it occupies. Approach that is thick rather than obligatory ends well.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3
