What this hexagram saysL4

Wind moving over water, breaking it up. Huàn is the scattering of something that had hardened — ice thawing, a faction dissolving, a blockage giving way. It is not loss. What disperses here is rigidity, and the same wind that scatters is what gathers people again around something worth gathering for.

When it comes upThis comes up when something has set hard: an estrangement, a faction, a mood that has stopped moving. The answer is not to attack the blockage but to loosen it, and then to supply a centre people will re-form around. The king goes to the temple — dissolving is only half the work.

This section is written for this site (L4), working from the source text, the Ten Wings and the classical commentaries on this page. It is not a translation of any of them.

JUDGMENT · L1

Hwân intimates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. The king goes to his ancestral temple; and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to be firm and correct.

Legge’s romanization predates pinyin, so the same word may be spelled differently in the two systems (Kh’ien / Qián). Body text on this site uses pinyin throughout.

YiStep readingL4

Success; the king enters the ancestral temple; it is worth crossing the great stream. The temple is the point — what has hardened is dissolved by supplying something larger for people to rejoin. And the crossing is favourable because this hexagram is Xun, wood, riding on Kan, water: it is the one situation where you already have the boat.

Kong YingdaL3

TUAN · Tuan commentary · L2

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The first line, divided, shows its subject engaged in rescuing (from the impending evil) and having (the assistance of) a strong horse. There will be good fortune.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Rescue at the very start, with the strength of a good horse. The blockage has only begun to set, and strength brought in now still has something to work with. The Xiang credits compliance rather than force — the horse is borrowed strength, not your own. Act while acting is still cheap.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The second line, undivided, shows its subject, amid the dispersion, hurrying to his contrivance (for security). All occasion for repentance will disappear.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

In the scattering, run to your support. The ji is the bench you take hold of when the ground moves. This line is not dispersing anything; it is finding footing so as not to be carried off. Securing yourself first is what makes the regret disappear — and it is all this line claims.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The third line, divided, shows its subject discarding any regard to his own person. There will be no occasion for repentance.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Dispersing your own person. The line gives up its regard for itself, and the Xiang says the aim lies outside. This is the turn from being someone who needs rescuing to being someone doing the work. No praise attaches to it, only the removal of regret — which is what it costs to stop being the centre.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fourth line, divided, shows its subject scattering the (different) parties (in the state); which leads to great good fortune. From the dispersion (he collects again good men standing out, a crowd) like a mound, which is what ordinary men would not have thought of.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Dispersing the faction — and this is the great one. Breaking up your own group looks like a loss and scores yuan ji, the highest mark in the hexagram, because what re-forms afterwards stands like a hill. The text says plainly that ordinary thinking would not have gone there. Loyalty to a faction was what blocked the larger thing.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject amidst the dispersion issuing his great announcements as the perspiration (flows from his body). He scatters abroad (also) the accumulations in the royal granaries. There will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

The great announcement given out like sweat, and the royal stores scattered. Sweat does not go back in, and a command that carries has the same quality. This line dissolves by declaring something plainly and then backing it by giving away what it was holding. The Xiang says it is the position that makes this work.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The topmost line, undivided, shows its subject disposing of (what may be called) its bloody wounds, and going and separating himself from its anxious fears. There will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Dispersing the blood, getting clear of the fear. Xue here is injury, and this line’s whole business is separation — putting distance between yourself and harm. At the top of dispersion, what remains to be scattered is the last of the damage. No error, and nothing more than that.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3
