What this hexagram saysL4

Wind over the lake, the surface answering the air above it. Zhōng fú is the truth at the centre; fu is a bird brooding an egg — warmth held long enough to hatch. The shape says the same thing: two broken lines at the middle, solid lines outside. A form hollow at the heart and firm around it.

When it comes upThis comes up where influence has to work without force — where you cannot compel and can only be believed. It asks whether what is at your centre is actually there. The judgment reaches pigs and fish, the least responsive creatures there are: what is genuine carries all the way out.

This section is written for this site (L4), working from the source text, the Ten Wings and the classical commentaries on this page. It is not a translation of any of them.

JUDGMENT · L1

Kung Fû (moves even) pigs and fish, and leads to good fortune. There will be advantage in crossing the great stream. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

Legge’s romanization predates pinyin, so the same word may be spelled differently in the two systems (Kh’ien / Qián). Body text on this site uses pinyin throughout.

YiStep readingL4

It reaches even pigs and fish; it is worth crossing the great stream. Those are the two claims. Sincerity that persuades only the receptive is never really tested — the measure is whether it moves what is dull and resistant. And the crossing is safe here because the hexagram’s hollow centre is itself a boat.

Kong YingdaL3

TUAN · Tuan commentary · L2

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

IMAGE · L2

The first line, undivided, shows its subject resting (in himself). There will be good fortune. If he sought to any other, he would not find rest.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Be settled in yourself: good fortune. Look to any other and you will not rest. Inner truth begins by not being divided, and the Xiang says the will has not yet changed. Before there is anyone to be sincere towards, there is the question of whether you are single-minded at all.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The second line, undivided, shows its subject (like) the crane crying out in her hidden retirement, and her young ones responding to her. (It is as if it were said), ‘I have a cup of good spirits,’ (and the response were), ‘I will partake of it with you.’

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

The crane calls in the shade and her young answer; I have a good cup, and will share it with you. This is the plainest statement in the Yi of how influence works here. Nothing is seen and nothing is commanded — the call goes out unwitnessed and the answer comes from the heart’s wish. Response, not persuasion.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The third line, divided, shows its subject having met with his mate. Now he beats his drum, and now he leaves off. Now he weeps, and now he sings.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Having met his match: now drumming, now stopping, now weeping, now singing. This line has found something outside itself to depend on, and lost its own centre in the process. The Xiang blames the position. The oscillation is the symptom — a truth that is genuinely inside you does not swing with what the other party does.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fourth line, divided, shows its subject (like) the moon nearly full, and (like) a horse (in a chariot) whose fellow disappears. There will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

The moon nearly full; the horse’s yoke-mate gone. Nearly full, not full — the line stops short of completion deliberately. And it leaves its partner, cutting the tie sideways in order to align upwards. Giving up a pairing you were comfortable in is exactly what leaves this line free of error.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject perfectly sincere, and linking (others) to him in closest union. There will be no error.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

Sincerity that binds, holding others in union. This is the ruling line: it argues no one into anything, it simply holds, and things are linked to it. The Xiang says the position is exactly right. Where line 3 swung with its partner, this line is the thing others hold on to.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3

The topmost line, undivided, shows its subject in chanticleer (trying to) mount to heaven. Even with firm correctness there will be evil.

Line commentary · L2

YiStep readingL4

The sound of the bird climbing to heaven — the cry going up where the bird itself cannot follow. This is inner truth become nothing but noise, reputation outrunning substance. The Xiang asks how it could possibly last. Even correctness does not save this line, because there is nothing left at the centre to be correct about.

Wang BiL3

Kong YingdaL3
